Planning

Historical Context

Established in 1854, Museums Victoria is Australia's largest public museum organization. The current Melbourne Museum building opened in 2000 in the Carlton Gardens, adjacent to the 19th-century Royal Exhibition Building, creating a unique precinct that juxtaposes the historical and the contemporary.

Photography Tips

  • No flash photography is allowed to protect the exhibits. Use a high ISO setting in lower light areas.
  • Use a wide-angle lens to capture the full scale of the dinosaur skeletons and the grand architecture.
  • Focus on details in the exhibits – the texture of a fossil, the fabric of a period costume.
  • In the Forest Gallery, try to capture the way the natural light filters through the trees.

Insider Tips

  • Visit on a weekday afternoon to avoid the morning rush of school groups.
  • Use the free cloaking service to store your bags and coats so you can explore unencumbered.
  • Start your visit on the top floor and work your way down to go against the main flow of traffic.
  • Download the museum map to your phone before you go to help plan your route through the vast building.

Our Partners

  • We are proud to partner with leading and trusted tour experience providers such as GetYourGuide and Viator to bring you a secure and reliable booking experience for the Melbourne Museum.

Fun Facts

  • The museum's collection contains over 17 million items!
  • The famous racehorse Phar Lap's heart, which is on display, was 1.5 times bigger than that of an average horse.
  • The Forest Gallery is home to over 100 plant species and 800 animal species, including live birds, fish, and reptiles.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation policies vary depending on the ticket type and the partner provider. Many standard entry tickets offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the visit. Please review the specific cancellation terms at the time of booking.

A Must-Visit in Melbourne!

The Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre was profoundly moving and educational. It's the heart of the museum and an absolute must-see. The rest of the museum is fantastic too, especially the Forest Gallery. We booked our tickets online the night before and walked straight in. So easy!

Great for a Rainy Day

We were looking for something to do when the weather turned, and this was the perfect choice. The kids were mesmerized by the dinosaurs and the bug exhibit. It's a huge place, so wear comfortable shoes. Deducting one star because the cafe was a bit crowded, but the exhibits were world-class.

Incredible Collection & Beautiful Building

As an architect, I was impressed by the building itself before I even got inside! The collection is vast and well-curated. 'The Melbourne Story' exhibit gave us such a great context for the city we were visiting. Spent a good 4 hours here and could have stayed longer. Highly recommend.

Wonderful for All Ages

I visited with my elderly parents and my young nephew, and there was something for everyone. The layout is very logical, and there are plenty of places to sit and rest. The detail in the exhibits is amazing. Booking through the platform was simple and we got our tickets instantly via email.

Very Informative and Well-Presented

A very comprehensive museum. The natural history sections are excellent, and the Phar Lap exhibit was an interesting piece of local culture. It gets very busy with school groups on weekdays, so if you prefer a quieter experience, maybe go in the afternoon or on a weekend.

Blown Away by the Forest Gallery

I can't believe there is an entire living rainforest inside a building! It was so peaceful and beautifully done. The rest of the museum was equally impressive. Great value for the price of admission. We found a great deal online and booking was a breeze.

A Journey Through Time

The dinosaur skeletons are truly breathtaking. It's one thing to see them in books, but another to stand right underneath them. The museum is very modern and interactive. A great way to spend an afternoon learning about Australia's unique history and environment.

Fantastic Family Day Out

The Children's Gallery is one of the best I've seen. It's interactive, educational, and genuinely fun for the little ones. The rest of the museum kept the adults entertained. Clean facilities, helpful staff, and easy to navigate. A top Melbourne attraction.
